It was mixed with crushed terracotta as an aggregate and formed into a cube. The cement set hard after 3 days and did not dissolve in water after this period. Process: First I burnt bark and leaves in a kiln at high temperatures to produce well burnt, mostly white wood ash. The ash was then mixed into water and stirred well. The excess water was poured off and the resulting paste was made into pellets and allowed to dry. A pellet was then re-heated in the forge until it glowed about orange hot. This was then taken out, cooled and dropped in a pot of water. The pellet dissolved and boiled due to a chemical reaction with the water. The paste was stirred and crushed terracotta (old tiles from previous projects) was added and mixed to form a mouldable mortar. This was formed into a cube and allowed to set for three days (in the video, a cube made exactly the same way 3 days previously was used due to time constraints). The resultant cube was strong and made a slight ringing sound when tapped with a finger nail. It was placed in water for 24 hours to simulate a very heavy rain event and did not dissolve or release residues into the water. My current theory: The main component of wood ash consists of calcium in some form (e.g. calcium carbonate, calcium oxide). This can be up to 45% from my research. Calcium is in higher concentration in the bark and leaves of a tree. When the ash is mixed with water, the soluble component of wood ash (10% pot ash) dissolves into the water. But seeing that it does nothing for the cementing process, it is drained off leaving the insoluble calcium (and other components) in the paste. Doing this probably raises the relative percentage of calcium in the paste to about 50% or more. Most of the other 50 % consists of silica and alumina which are pozzolans, materials that chemically react with calcium hydroxide to increase the durability of the cement product. The paste was then made into a pellet and fired again to high temperature to convert all the calcium compounds to calcium oxide. It also reduces any charcoal in the pellet to ash if it hadn’t already been burnt the first time. This step seemed important as un-fired ash pellets only partially hardened and would fall apart in water, though retaining a weak undissolved 5mm thick crust. I can only surmise that re-firing the ash just gave a greater conversion of the calcium components to calcium oxide. The pellet is slaked in water converting the calcium oxide to calcium hydroxide. This cement was mixed with crushed terracotta which may also help in some way that I’m not aware of as I only did this one experiment and did not test other aggregates yet (e.g. sand, gravel etc.). Terracotta is porous and might hold together better than other materials. The mixture is allowed to set in air where carbon dioxide reacts with calcium hydroxide to form calcium carbonate cementing the aggregate together. After this, the cement will not dissolve in water. Use: I think this material might have a potential use as a mortar holding rocks or bricks together in wet environments where limestone or snail shells are unavailable for making cement. Wood ash is a pretty ubiquitous material to most natural environments inhabited by people using biomass fuels. Wood ash cement turns a waste product into a valuable building material. From my research, wood ash is already being used as a partial replacement for cement in the building industry without decreases in strength of the final product. But I’ve only just started experimenting with it and don’t know its full capabilities and limitations. Calcium content of wood ash differs depending on the species of tree, the part of the tree burnt and the soil it’s grown on. Cautious experimentation is still required before committing to a hut built from this material.

Primitive Technology: Reusable charcoal mound

10:06
*Turn on captions for written commentary (CC in bottom right corner of screen). Charcoal is a valuable fuel that reaches a higher temperature than the very wood it’s made from. I’ve made some before, but with supplies running low due to furnace experiments, I decided to make another large batch of charcoal in a mound. I stacked the wood into a roughly conical shape (about 1 m wide and 75 cm high) and then built a thick wall of mud around the heap (this took 6 hours). Eight air entries were made in the base of the mound and one air exit hole was left at the top of the mound to allow the volatile components of the wood to escape while creating a natural draft to keep everything burning. The mound was lit and the flame burned backwards down the heap in the opposite direction to the draft. This protects the coal made above the level of the fire from burning as carbon dioxide rushes past instead of oxygen, preventing combustion of charcoal. Each air entry was sealed only when fire became visible through them. This is an easy way to tell when to close them up, i.e. when the fire had burned down all of the wood in the heap. When the last air entry was closed, the air exit at the top of the mound was sealed, 5 hours after starting. The next day when cool, a large arched opening was made in the side of the mound to extract the charcoal. Despite a few unburnt brands the yield and quality was good filling almost 2 baskets. To see if the kiln was reusable, I restacked it with timber cut from a fallen gum tree branch up the mountain. Due to the difficulty in reaching into the mound I stacked the wood in criss-crossed horizontal layers. The opening was sealed with mud and the mound lit as before. This time the mound burned quickly and I had to seal it early as the timber was burning at different rates, 3 hours after starting. Some large logs remained unburnt while charcoal that had already formed started to burn up being wasted as ash. When I opened it the next day it had still produced an ok amount of charcoal but was disappointingly low compared to the first batch. This may partly be due to some of the wood being still green though it’s probably more likely to be due to how it was stacked. The lesson here is that when making charcoal the wood needs to be tightly stacked with few air spaces between. If not, the mound admits too much oxygen that quickly burns the timber. Another thought I had was that wood may convert to charcoal better if laid vertically (or roughly so, like the cone in the first firing) so that the fire starts at the top of the wood and burns down. Stacking the wood in horizontal layers means that each layer has to set the one bellow alight leading to problems if the wood is green (use dry wood if stacking horizontally). By stacking wood vertically each piece is alight already and simply burns down towards the air entries. Stacking in this way also makes it easier to see fire in the air entries letting you know when to seal the mound. For the reasons above I may make another charcoal kiln in future in the shape of a cylinder with air entries around the base and an open top. The kiln would be re-usable and easily stacked. A conical pile of wood would protrude above the walls of the kiln and be plastered in a temporary cover of mud. The kiln would be fired as with a normal mound and when finished the temporary cover of mud would be removed to extract the charcoal Wordpress: https://primitivetechnology.wordpress.com/ Patreon page: https://www.patreon.com/user?u=2945881 I have no face book page, instagram, twitter etc. Beware of fake pages.

Can You Hear the Difference Between a Cheap and Expensive Violin?

I went into Peter Prier and Sons in Salt Lake City, where I put to the test a violin I bought off of Amazon for $62, and an antique Italian violin for $285,000. Scroll down for answers on what makes these instruments worth so much. The first song I play is Hallelujah, and the second is AC/DC "Thunderstruck". Simple economics dictates that when there is a demand but little supply, value increases. The Quality: Musicians have long believed that the antique Italian violins are superior to other violins in quality and sound. It’s believed that cooler temperatures from the 1200s to the mid 1800s contributed to a denser tree bark, making the wood that was used in constructing these instruments of a higher quality and offering a better acoustic. They’re Fashionable: Owning an old Italian is a status symbol in the world of music, thus increasing its legend, value and price. The Condition and History of the Instrument: Any of these violins are between 100-300 years old, making it an historical icon as well as an instrument. If the instrument is also in excellent condition, the value increases. Make Lichtenberg wood art safely. (Edited by request.)

Comments are momentarily disabled on this video. On the basis that people have died while using microwave oven transformers to burn patterns into wood, I thought it would be a good idea to show an alternative power source for making these images without the HUGE risks associated with microwave oven transformers. The concept behind making these images is that the surface of wood is moistened with salty water that forms a conductive layer. A high voltage is then applied across the wood and as the current flows it first heats the moist surface causing the water to evaporate and then a conductive carbonised track will follow the retreating moisture, burning a very random and fractal-like lightning pattern across the wood. One of the easiest high voltage transformers to find is the one used in microwave ovens, but what many of the articles and videos on the Internet fail to mention is the HUGE hazards associated with these transformers. They put out high voltage, but more importantly HIGH CURRENT and pose a huge risk of instant fatal electrocution by forcing high current through your body, potentially disrupting your hearts synchronisation. The hazard is increased greatly by the ability of the high voltage to create current paths across materials you might normally consider as insulated, particularly in this technique where conductive liquid gets splashed everywhere. I do NOT recommend using microwave oven transformers outside of a fully grounded and safety interlocked enclosure. The use of lower current neon sign transformers is still capable of delivering a significant shock, but by default they are current limited and pose much less of a fatality risk. The lower current also creates a slower and more detailed result without blowing big chunks out of your creation like a higher current transformer will. It's harder to get traditional neon transformers these days due to the higher use of LED lighting technology in signs. If you ask at a local sign shop they may be able to sell you either a new or old one. Note that modern units have safety circuitry built in to cut power to a sign if it starts arcing or goes open circuit. This type is not really suited to the wood burning as it will trip out. Some electronic neon transformers are also very fickle and may fail when used in non-neon applications. The popular F.A.R.T (yes really) transformers tend to have removable electronic modules in them that allow them to be used as a simple transformer. You could also try eBay for a traditional core and coil neon transformer. Oh, and one last thing.... Do not use microwave oven transformers. I just thought I'd mention that again. Petrified wood is one of my favorite fossils and also one of the most recognizable ones but not all petrified is the same. Depending on where its from, the species of tree, and the environment while its fossilizing, it can come in an assortment of colors, shapes and textures.

Vintage Stanley Planes: Is older really better?

19:50
More videos and exclusive content: https://www.patreon.com/rexkrueger Most hand tool collectors and users go way back when they get Stanley bench planes. Older ones are usually more valuable and are often considered to work better, especially when compared to later-model, post-war planes. But this wisdom is almost totally wrong. Stanley planes did start to suck in the 1960s, but the planes they made in the 1950s and before may be the best they ever made. These late-model planes have improved features, thicker castings, easier adjustment and more precise machining. And, these planes are typically ignored by collectors, so you can get them cheap. Are you thinking about shelling out big bucks for a premium plane? Maybe first, you should check out a late-model Stanley.

Reclaimed Wood. Good News/Bad News (WnW #45)

Spending a few hours processing some salvaged oak. All went well until the very end... ⇊ Click show more for the rest of the details! ⇊ At the University here in town there is a large old building undergoing renovations. I was able to rescue some old oak boards which I'm processing here to make into drawers. These appear to be some sort of old trim -- but at 7/8" thick and over 5" wide they are plenty large. I first resawed the boards down to about 5/8" thickness before planing them down to the desired thickness. Along the way I took note of some interesting "holes" in the back of the boards. These appear to be an older form of pocket hole construction. I've been woodworking since 1995 and the only kind of pocket holes I'd seen had come from a Kreg jig. I had mistakenly assumed that they invented that process but obviously I'm wrong. These boards are likely 50+ years old. Toward the end I made the unpleasant discovery that I had NOT successfully found and removed all metal. So it looks like I need some new blades in my planer soon. So free wood = great news Damaged my planer blades = not so great news. ————— ---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- LINKS TO SOME OF THE ITEMS USED. Wanting to practice 3d modeling more, I designed a set of rails to hold the Joy-Con controllers so they can be attached to anything.  If you aren't familiar with the Switch, it's a game system that has two removable controllers that attach to the game's portable screen. When the screen is docked, the controllers come off and you hold them in separate hands. I know you can buy aftermarket products that hold the Joy-Cons making it look like a traditional, unified game controller, but newsflash...I like to make my own stuff. I liked the idea of designing and 3d printing just the attachment rails that the Joy-Cons would slide into; that way, someone could attach them to anything, allowing people to make their own truly unique game controller. We went back and forth on what the center item would be; a Lego build plate, a beautiful piece of figured wood, or maybe a bucket of popcorn, all you need are flat sides. After looking at the Switch, I found that I didn't like the unnecessarily oversized boxes that the SD card-sized games came in. I thought it was a huge waste and decided that the center item should be a holder for our games. Since I was already using digital modeling and 3d printing for the rails, I decided to make this Nintendo-centric project all about digital fabrication. I designed a simple box that would open at the top to receive a sliding plate that would hold the games. I used my Glowforge to laser cut the pieces and assembled the shallow wooden box with CA glue (of course I added my logo for good measure). The sliding plate matched the inner dimensions of the box, but I left room for some thin sheets of foam. I again used the Glowforge to cut spaces in the foam that would securely hold the game cards. I used spray adhesive to attach this layer to the sliding card. To add a little more friction to the slide, I glue an extra piece of foam inside the box as well. I CA glued a thin strip of teak to the top of the slide to act as a pull tab, which also worked as a cap for the box. I applied a few coats of spray lacquer and it was ready for assembly. With the game holder all finished, I set the 3d printed rails in place and marked the screw holes. I pre-drilled the holes and attached the rails using small brass screws that I had to grind down to length. With everything in place, it was ready for the Joy-Cons. I slid the controllers in place and loaded up the game holder. Everything held tight and felt comfortable in my hands, it was really satisfying. This project used primarily digital design and fabrication products, which I know not everyone has access to. BUT, they were incredibly valuable for a project like this. I had to change elements of my design many times, (the final product was version 6!) and using 3d printing allowed me to make quick design changes using inexpensive material. The final product was a perfect fit and this project was completed in about a day. If you are interested in digital fabrication, you can seek out local Maker Spaces, use online 3d printing services, or you can get entry-level 3d printers for around $200 and they make great prints. If you want to see more rapid prototyping and digital fabrication, you can check out my other 3d printing, laser cutting, and CNC milling videos to see what's it all about!

BioLite Campstove 2 Full Review - Charge Phones With Fire!

11:33
BioLite Camp Stove 2 Full Review Turn Fire Into Electricity. New Customers get $10 off your first purchase at BioLite Store. Go Now. http://www.avantlink.com/click.php?tt=ml&ti=460509&pw=241669 The BioLite Campstove 2 is a wood-powered stove that also charges electronic devices. Find out all you need to know about it and its accessories, like the grill accessory, the kettle, and some other fun stuff. We’ll also dive into specs, opinions, and how to use it. Unboxing Inside the box, we have a BioLite starter kit with an LED light and some firestarter briquettes. You also have a kettle; inside the kettle is: a little cup, a BioLite inside of a stuff pack with the actual generator, and a fire chamber down below. Below that is the campstove grill. All the parts come out so you can clean them individually. What is the BioLite Campstove 2? The BioLite Campstove 2 is a thermoelectric generator that uses the Seebeck effect to produce heat energy. Using the Seebeck effect, heat is generated within the fire chamber then transferred down a conductor where it hits a heat sink, which converts the differential heat and cold into energy it uses to charge your devices. Cool! How Does the BioLite Campstove 2 Work? The heat this device generates with a fire going inside (it will auto kick on when it detects heat) has enough power to run a fan with variable speeds ranging from 25-100 percent, and has enough energy to run the fan which swirls the air to create a smokeless fire. Also it has enough energy to charge the 2600 milliamp internal battery inside the BioLite so you can use it to charge devices later when you're done with the fire (a great upgrade from the BioLite 1) and you can also use it to charge your smart device (cellphone, GPS, or any 5-volt device) at the same time. It has three displays on front, on the left you have the fire temperature (keep it high) in the middle is the fan speed which has LEDs that show a charge up to 100 percent. And on the right side is a display showing the internal battery charge for the 2600 milliamp battery inside. You can charge this at home using a micro usb so you have a full charge when you get to your destination. Can I Use the BioLite Campstove 2 for Backpacking? The weight of this is 2.5 lbs, 3.5 lbs with the kettle. If I were hiking the Appalachian Trail this might be cumbersome. I would be using this primarily for car camping or on a day hike for six to eight hours when you’re staying camped out for the weekend. It’s a lot of fun to use and I’ve been looking for any excuse I can to play with it. See cooking steaks, boiling water, how long things take to charge, and more right here. LINKS When Is a Good Time to Use the BioLite? It will give you endless energy when you are in a place with wood, lots of resources to burn. I normally use solar but if you’re in a rainy or cloudy location, this is a great alternative as long as you have biomass to burn. Hunting Cabins Wooded locations are ideal for using this device. You can always charge your device. If you don’t like having your phone with you while camping, I think it’s still great to use in an emergency. Being able to charge your cellphone as many times as you want could be valuable. Let's also consider the usefulness of charging your usb headlamps, flashlights, GPS, walkie talkies, camera gear, and other USB rechargeable devices. Just by having a fire going, you can charge your devices without having to take extra batteries. It may take some time, but it will eventually charge them. In the Car This is nice to have in the back of your car for emergencies. Use it to boil snow, boil water, or use the kettle pot for cooking. It’s a multipurpose kit, which is very handy. The thermogenerator fits inside the burn chamber, the burn chamber fits inside of the kettle pot, the lid goes on top of that, creating a contained unit that fits conveniently inside the stuff sack. It could be a very useful survival tool. On Your Snowmobile This could be a useful tool between runs, or a convenient way to charge your devices while taking a break. Not only can it keep you warm, but it would probably burn wet wood easily because the swirling air makes the fire hotter, so it will burn what you want once it gets going. It comes with little firestarter kits, but I haven’t really needed them. Survival This device is smokeless, so it’s very discreet for survival purposes. It’s convenient to keep in your vehicle, in your cabin, or in your RV for charging any device in almost any setting as long as you have biomass to burn. Overall, I would recommend the BioLite 2 for both camping, survival, and fun! You can buy the BioLite Campstove 2 using this LINK. Thanks for reading and as always, Happy Camping!

How to tell if a painting is old or a reproduction

04:15
Tips on how to identify if a painting is old and original or a copy. Dr. Mark Sublette owner of Medicine Man Gallery shares his twenty five years of experience in the art world on what to look for. Examples of older paintings and what are keys to be looking for before you ever buy. Website: https://www.medicinemangallery.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/medicinemangallery Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/medicinemangallery How to tell if a painting is old or a reproduction I look at artwork every day of my life – often to buy and people need my advice of what their piece is, and if its original or not. Today I want to talk about: how do you tell an original piece of artwork, and I specifically kind of hone in on paintings, because what I see all the time are pieces that are reproductions or prints or flat-out fakes and frauds. So, some of the little highlights that you need to know if you're looking to purchase a piece of artwork or if you have a piece of artwork if it's original is: 1) if it's supposedly old and has a date on it, let's say it says 1923, well it should look like it's old. You should turn over the back of the painting, and look. The back of the painting, quite frankly, is going to tell you as much as the front of the painting. If the canvas is very white, and the little sticks that you'll see in the corners that are the little spacer or the bars that you see around the edge of the painting, if those are very white and have not oxidized, it's not old – it's a new piece, and it's probably jaclay. A jaclay is a copy of an original oil painting piece of artwork. They can be very nice; they can have value, but they're a copy; a photographic copy put on canvas, and the idea is to make it look like the original. And quite frankly, from a photograph when I get them on the internet sometimes you can't tell because it can be a Charlie Russell, and it looks like a Charlie Russell because “Hey, guess what?” It is, but it's a copy; it's a jaclay. So, when you look at the piece in person, you should be able to see individual brushstrokes and thickness and texture to the paint. Those jacylays will often have the brushstrokes, but you'll see kind of a sheen on the top that really just doesn't look right. And then if you turn it around on the back you'll see staples where the canvas has been stapled to the stretcher bars. The stretcher bars, which are the foundation bars, will be. The canvas will be white, (and) there's no oxidation. Charlie Russell was painting at the turn of the century – if you've got that time frame, things are going to happen. Also, the frame will tell you something. If you look at a frame and it is got chips – again, the wood is oxidized, and you may see different holes where it's been used in the past; look at these things. If they look old and feel old and maybe even smell old; if they've been in a smoker’s home for 20-30 years, you'll smell the nicotine. Use your senses, and if that little voice says, “Something's wrong.” Guess what? It is. So, you can't just go buy a history, because I can tell you this: after twenty years of doing this, histories are very easy to fabricate, and people do this, or they just, you know, (have a) family lore (that) says, “Oh, this has been in our family for a hundred years.” Well, the realities of it, (is) take that into consideration, but it's probably the last thing. First, use your own eyes (and) your own senses. Does this feel like it's a painting that's old or not? Remember, people do make frauds and fakes. So, if you're buying older works you have to (and it looks old – well, it could be an old painting that they've signed a name on. I see all the time old paintings where somebody's put Maynard Dixon) you have to know your subject matter, and if it's obviously not his work, not his signature, not his style, then it's not right. The last thing I go on (with) a painting is the signature. That's the very last thing that I take into consideration because the signature is easier to fake than style, composition, and the way the painting looks like. You know, they can be a good forger of the name Maynard Dixon, but they can't do the palette; they can't do the structure or the composition of the painting. Even if it's an old painting, it just doesn't hack it. So, when you look at these things, be very critical. Look for age, especially on old pieces; they should have a certain sensibility and if they don't, get an expert to look at it before you ever purchase it.

How to Make Bismuth Crystals

03:33
Bismuth ingots can be purchased here (this is an affiliate link): http://ebay.to/1iwwqji Bismuth is non-toxic and has a number of very interesting properties. For best results I recommend using at least 4 or 5 pounds of bismuth for the surface crystallization method demonstrated in the video. The deeper the pool of bismuth is in the pan the better, because the crystals will have extra room to grow before they touch the bottom. The more you use the more impressive your results will be. Some of you that are familiar with other forms of crystal formation may be thinking I gave bad advice when I state in the video that you can move the crystals as they grow. Usual crystal growth requires a very still solution with no movement, and a very slow cool down period. I did quite a lot of experimenting with this method and found that bismuth does not behave quite the same way. Once the crystals have begun forming it does not seem to matter if they are moved so long as they remain submerged. Further structured growth happens regardless of disturbance once there is a point to nucleate from. You may also notice that I was not wearing gloves for a portion of the video, that was foolish of me. I was wearing eye protection the entire time. Leather gloves (not synthetic!) and lab goggles should always be worn in case of splashes or spills. If you would like to skip the process of making your own crystals, you can buy them already made here (another affiliate link): http://ebay.to/1BIvj2C Music: Minimal - Soundaround -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Check out my latest video: "How To View Invisible Air Currents With Lasers" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K94Cc21KEIA -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-
